IVANOVO

The population is 409.285 of inhabitants.
Situated in the central part of Russia, to the north-east from Moscow, it is the centre of the Ivanovo province. Before 1932 it had the name of Ivanovo-Voznesensk , a pretty conventional name for Russia.

Named a textile hub of Russia, it is also known as “a city of brides” as far as employees of the textile industry are mostly women.
In addition to textile enterprises there are industrial amalgamations producing leather goods, chemical and food factories.
The city of Ivanovo is quite young as a matter of fact, being found at the site of a village of the same name.

The modern city was created by merging the old flax-processing village Ivanovo with the industrial Voznesensky Posad in 1871.[citation needed] Yakov Garelin—a patron of arts, historian, manufacturer, and public figure—is considered to be the founder of the city and its second head. Under his government, the city began to develop, industrialise, and grow.

Currently it is a large educational centre; there are a few universities. Around Ivanovo there are a quantity of small villages and settlements, inhabitants of which come here for the secondary and university education.

The first Workers’ and Peasants’ Council was formed in Ivanovo and it is therefore called “The first Council City“ sometimes. Ivanovo is an integral part of the association of the cities forming a tourist route “The Golden Ring”
