ST. PETESBURGO

Designed by Peter the Great and founded by his decree of 27 May 1703. The Peter’s idea was to create a city tailored as an european port giving Russia a sea access to Europe. Petersbourg is therefore frequently called ” a window into Europe”.

The city numbers 5.200.000 of inhabitants, but this is not an exact figure since there is a constant resident influx from other parts of Russia and abroad.

The whole of the city’s centre is on the UNESCO mankind cultural heritage list.

Located in the Finnish Bay of the Baltics, at the mouth of the Neva river. It is Russia’s only port on the Baltic Sea, with Kaliningrad and it’s special position out of the count.
Many channels and adjoining palaces create resemblance with the North Venice. The city’s architecture , which is notably influenced by Italy of XVIII-century , features Barocco and Neo-classical examples.

The most important tourist attractions are :

the Hermitage museum with one of the world largest art collections, situated in the Zimny Dvoretz ( a Barocco styled winter palace ) ;
the Petropavlovskaya Fortress, founded in 1703 served as a prison for political exiles. On the territory of the fortress there is a temple of the same name, Petropavlovskaya;
the Isaakian Cathedral with it’s majestic dome resembling Vatican – another symbol of Petersbourg;
the Admiralty building, the spire of which is visible from all over the city

-The most known of the city’s streets is the Nevsky avenue beginning from the Alexander Nevsky church and ending with the Admiralty building.. The best hotels, restaurants and every world brand outlets are situated here, on the Nevsky avenue.
– A few kilometers away from the city there lies Peterhoff. This remarkable palace is famous for majestic parks and a great number of fountains, gilt and designed after the greek mythology.

Apart of cultural significance, Petersbourg is a big industrial city. The most important manufacture branches are chemistry, construction and mechanical engineering.
